As a comic strip in a mainstream newspaper, I barely show the characters drinking, much less very drunk (or as the Americans call it, shit-faced). On the other hand, it’s a real situation when young men have to drink with their prospective father-in-law, who spend every night drinking scotch (or whiskey) with their drinking buddies (whiskada?) And you do it out of love, or maybe respect, or just being Filipino.
So writing about this rite-of-passage is very much the same as undergoing the rite-of-passage itself.
Looks like poor Glen’s totally pickled in brandy.
Something I’ve heard a few times: ‘most filipino men are alcoholics. none of them think this is a problem.’ true or false?
i think that’s true(kinda)…
this happened to me, difference is i wasn’t drinking with the dad of my bf but his sisters(and female cousins)…good thing i didn’t eat anything else i would’ve been throwing up…i ended up sleeping though…hehehe
True sad but true, it’s part of the culture where light drinkers like me are considered wimps
gotta give Glen credit though, he wouldn’t have gone through all that if he really didn’t love chompy
Whiskada?? L you can render an old school comic of younger Chompys dad and his Whiskada, haha!
False. Drinking in this country is more of a social function than a psychological disorder.
It’s a means to break the ice for a newcomer (Glenn) to the group (Chompy’s Dad + his Brandykada and family).
The beverage acts as a medium that gels the group together especially when you drink the same beverage.
But then, the machismo of consuming large amounts of one of a potent alcoholic beverage seems out-of-date.
Brandy is something I would rather sip
Are we refering to the hit ABC 5 show ‘when good cartoonists get drunk?’ I hope they bring that back….
WAHAHAHAAHAH!!! when cartoonists get drunk…..
