The original strip has Chompy requesting for pasalubong.
I didn’t know how pasalubong translates into english (souvenirs?) but I do know the Chomps sounds a lot more selfish when she asks for souvenirs.
Then I realize that Westeners make different requests from traveling acquaintances compared to Filipinos, hence the above changes.
Why’s Glen so upset? He should be happy for his parents finally deciding to have fun with their lives and have an adventure out in the world. He should be asking to go with them instead. 😉
Mary: He’s upset that they only told him at the last minute, right before boarding their flight. If your parents did that, wouldn’t you be the least bit upset too?
Pheobe: Well, I’d be surprised but I’d honestly feel happy for them for doing something so spontaneous and exciting. My parents NEED a vacation any kind of spice in their lives. My mom’s always the mom and dad’s a workaholic. For once, together, without any whiny kids to take care of. My reaction would be similar to chompy’s in the strip actually. 🙂
reminds me, I have to give chompy some brochures, perhaps I could sneak a six pack of san mig light here.
Mary: looking at the strip, I don’t think Glen is really upset–more likely indignant at not being informed.
Re your parents needing a vacation, why don’t you surprise them with one? Call your local 3 or 5 star hotel and ask about their weekender package. Most hotels have packages that include 2-night stays, breakfast, welcome cocktails, use of the amenities, and sometimes a massage at the hotel spa, they also have special rates during the off-season. Even if your dad is an extremely busy man, i think he can spare 48 hours during the weekend. Also, a ‘local vacation’ is close enough so your mom won’t worry about leaving you kids to your own devices. Check if he has a weekend client meeting before you book though. And don’t throw a party as soon as they’re out of sight.
Pheobe: My mom runs a parlor and beauty salon (and there just so happens to be a spa in the neighborhood too), and my dad runs a hotels and restaurants along with her. Getting my parents the vacation you suggest would just remind them of work, they need a different kind of vacation. Possibly somewhere exotic and otherwordly. -_-
Chompy actually wanted to ask for brochures to add to her collection.. 😀
Mary: toinks! what were the odds that I’d suggest the very thing that your parents do for a living? in that case, even traveling will remind your dad of work and he’ll be reviewing every hotel he’s staying in.
Mary, au contrarie cherie, your dad would benefit most if you book them in the finest hotels you could ever lay your mouse on, unless you would want to book on the phone. I could suggest they could come here in Bangkok. There are a lot of touristy spots in store and mind you, your dad would exhilarate on this experience.
Ken, I don’t know how relaxed Mary’s dad would be when he sees the bill Mary’s rung up on his behalf. Mary, if your dad runs a hotel, talk to his concierge na lang and ask for his help to plan a nice relaxing weekend for your parents. I think they will appreciate being on the receiving end of the pamperiing for a change.
Pheobe: Even if I did manage to make vacation plans there’s no telling that my parents would actually go with the idea. My mom would be all skeptical about plans to a place she’s never been before because she usually meticulously plans vacations herself. She’d do a lot of rechecking and rescheduling on my surprise vacation before she even considers going through it. As for my dad, mom’s been trying to get him to go have a relaxing vacation with her for years but he’s made it clear that nearly an act of God can get him to go on a vacation without thinking about work.
As I said before. Ah, parents. :-S
Mary: who said anything about traveling? I was suggesting that you talk to your dad’s hotel concierge to plan a mini vacation for your parents right within your dad’s own hotel, that your parents be ‘guests’ of the hotel and enjoy the hotels services and ammenities for a weekend. You can even talk your dad into it by suggesting that this could be an opportunity for him to evaluate the hotel from a guest’s point of view.
Mary: can your dad offer hotel discounts if we decide to visit cebu for a *eherm* book tour?
L: Mary’s from Cebu?!
I think L’s got Mary and Phoebe mixed up.. unless Mary’s dad is in Cebu.. :p
Oooh Sorry can’t help you with your cebu plans since I’m from Cagayan de Oro L. But if you ever do decide to visit CDO then I’d be happy to get you a discount at my family’s hotel. 🙂
Mary: I like cdo. it’s not half as dusty as cebu. which hotel does your dad run?
Pheobe: Grand City Hotel and Nature’s Pensionne. If you’re ever in CDO try staying there sometime and go to the restaurant’s inside and outside of it namely tapsi time, You can see an artwork of mine there. I like cebu too, I spent a lot of vacations in my childhood there. I think it’s a lot bigger and more fun than a small city like CDO, at least you guys have more places to go (by that I mean you have bigger and better malls). I miss going there.
Lyndon: Hey Lucky stroke! It occurred to me that I do have an aunt that runs a hotel in Cebu too. It’s the Northwind hotel, and if you tell me how long you’re planning to stay there, how many rooms you’re planning to check in and how many people will be staying in them, I think I’ll be able to get you a nice discount. 🙂 I’ll let you know more details about the hotel if you’re interested.
Mary: your aunt runs Northwinds Hotel? That’s where I usually recommend out of town friends and acquaintances who are looking for decent, affordable, accessible lodgings. the rooms are small but clean and it’s about 10 minutes away from Ayala Center Cebu, and less than 15 minutes away from SM City Cebu. When was the last time you were here? They just expanded both SM and Ayala, and there’s a new mall opening around the end of may.
Glad to hear that about my aunt’s hotel and good to know that cebu is gettin better too. Sadly, I haven’t been to cebu in a long long time. I don’t think I’ve been there since, i dunno possibly over two years (GAH). But my dad goes there a lot for business and so does my lil bro since he has regular checkups there for his teeth (poor almost-toothless butterball)
pasalubong = give aways
HEy mary, I may want to visit cebu and CDO, any primers?
