This strip establishes that Jay and Glen were dorm mates as early as their freshmen year.
C.M.T. means Cadet Military Training, a requirement for all college-age lads a decade ago.
They now replaced it with an optional community service program, I believe.
A lot of early Beerkada angst dealt with this horrid program.
Now, however, I believe we got it better than the Singaporean, Israeli, and South Korean males, who have to give two years of their young lives to compulsory military service.
C.M.T. still sucked, though. Witness Eraserheads’s Yoko.
Actually, I failed in three C.M.T. courses… Navy Army and Airforce… Thats for school-hopping.
The NSTP that replaced old school ROTC has 3 options:
> Military Training Service
> Literacy Training Service
> Civic Welfare Training Service
And are there students who still go to MTS?
Lyndon’s right… no matter what name they try to take, compulsory military service sucks.
Why can’t the higher-ups leave it to those who ACTUALLY wanted to get shout on, ridiculed, tortured and stepped all over to people who actually WANT to.
I know that even something as twisted and irrational as this sadomasochism sessions have its purposes, but if the higher-ups REALLY want the youth to have both physical strength and discipline, why not just implement programs involving kung-fu or martial arts for that matter.
I took Literacy Training Service so I got away with it but I still hate Citizens Army Training (HS).
At least I didn’t take the Officer’s Course. The prospect of spending 2 more years, attrition rate and the attitude of some officers convinced me otherwise. Don’t get me started with the corruption in the ranks. I paid around P200 for a shirt I never got. At least the Israelis’ two-year service is justified. Some of their neighbors want to wipe them off the map and the whole Palestinian thing in their backyard. Makes me want to watch “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan”.
I remember when we took MS 21 and 22 we had the option of taking Civic Welfare Service (which we did) or Law Enforcement Service. Those who took CWS just spent 6 Sundays in an obscure barangay smwhere whereas the LES cadets had to stay at school grounds.
Later we found out that after some time that LES came to be known as Lumpia Eating Student cadets courtesy of an ambulant vendor (aling mc beal?)
Still, It was something I could have done without.
I actually survived 2 years in a special flight and found the whole thing enjoyable and signed on for 2 years more and graduatedfrom it a C/2Lt.
Coming from that generation that saw the transition from ROTC/CMT to CWTS (2002, IIRC), I find that the justification for this college-based madness should be reviewed.
If they need miltary service, they should target non-college students to sign up for it.
Or a better and more sensible defense module.
