A friend revealed to me this life truth: hard work doesn’t pay and that everything in Dilbert is the Bona fide truth, that and a few other belief shattering truths.
Ye gads. <:-( This is what growing up is about then huh? A series of cracks on your rose colored glasses and realizing again and again that there was never a Santa Claus. Innocence is lost and its downhill to jadedness. I know uninitiated youths like me have to grow up sooner or later, but could someone please tell me that it’s okay for me to still hold on to some part of my innocence as a youth? or at least life won’t be like a lord of the flies story?
Mary: Life is generally hard, but has moments that make it worth the hardships. and re: holding on to your innocence? Growing old is compulsory, but growing up is optional. 😉
No, no, no. The biggest lie is when they tell you that the growing up phase ends at 18. It actually ends at 30. Come to think of it, it never ends.
Pheobe: Whew, thanks. 😀 Glad it’s not that ugly of a prospect. So what do you think Ken means anyway by telling me to grow up? He wants me to be more aware about the world yeah, but what does he expect me to do about it exactly?
Mary: I think Ken is trying to tell you that being childlike is much different from being childish. Being childlike when it comes to appreciating the things in life is a good thing, on the other hand, being childish is very irritating to those around you.
Ken’s advice about being more aware of the world simply means that you should be open to more than just your own point of view. When you are a child, you feel like the world revolves around you. as you grow older, you slowly learn that not everything is about you, and you need to accept that other peoples’ opinions are valid too, even the ones that you don’t agree with.
You don’t have to surrender the childlike virtue of being full of wonder and hope, but acknowledging the fact that not everyone who disagrees with you is an idiot is a very important life lesson that will save you a lot of grief in life. I know a few unfortunate people who never learned this and they find it very difficult to keep their jobs and making relationships work. They are also extremely annoying.

psychoCOW: I think the only ones who think growing up ends at 18 are those who are between 16 and 19, That’s the age we tend to think we’re invincible and wise to the ways of the world kasi 🙂 we usually get disabused of that notion at around age 23.

when I tell you to grow up mary, I meant for you is to expand your horizon and accept the fact that your inputs aren’t necessarily correct, you have the potential, but you tend to believe in childish fantasies: You think everything revolves around you. Growing up is a continuous process and it doesn’t really end even when you reach the age of ninety-nine.
There are a lot of media inanities though, like Cherish your youth, don’t grow up to soon, but then again, you need to grow UP…

Ken: I didn’t spot any mistakes when I read what you typed the first time. The way I read kasi, I go really fast, and as long as I grasp the gist of it, I’m not persnickety about the grammar. What I meant was, yung mga sayings na ganon, they get interpreted (or misinterpreted) by people to suit their arguments. 🙂 Kaya siguro nalilito ang mga bata.
