Draw/Back at the Museum of Contemporary Art

I recently met Luisa Zaide, organizer for the Draw/Back exhibit which will showcase how Japanese art has influenced the Philippines. And yes, we’re talking about Man Chii, among other things.

It turns out she’s the granddaughter of Gregorio Zaide, the historian.

Huh. I thought Zaide was an urban legend, much like TCWAG’s Leithold.

I asked her if her family’s house is full of historical artifacts and heritage books. She replied their residence in Pangasinan is in such a state.

Now I know a Zaide. 😀

Anyway, I’m part of the exhibit, which starts from July 7 and ends around late August. It’s open to the public: just look for the modern building that’s about to transform near Vito Cruz.

I went to the second meeting in the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design near DLSU-Taft at 4pm today, where I caught up with good friend and Japan Foundation-Manila  laision Bambi D. She presented the latest JFM newsletter, which featured a session of gift-wrapping fabric. I asked where I could get such fabric in Manila, as well as origami paper.

She recommended Saizen in Robinsons Galleria.

I went there after the meeting, and man, its the Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street of Japan P85 stores. I got some origami paper, wrapping cloth, cd cases, folders, self-drying clay, and other unique stuff. The staff were extra helpful, I might add.

What if Arnold Arre infused his Martial Law Babies with the same supernatural action of his earlier graphic novels? What if you wanted to watch Watchmen without having read the book first thus perserving the mystery of the villain who wanted to screw up the world through some absurd plot device?

Then you get 20th Century Boys, the live-action version of a popular Japanese manga by Urasawa Naoki. This is epic storytelling, the first of a trilogy of movies that depicts the trials of a bunch of former childhood friends who battle an evil organization they concocted back when they were still in grade school.

If you want to recapture that feeling from a movie that completely surprises you, go see this film.

Holy crap. Isn’t this picture like one of those macabre German expressionist paintings, where a man stares at his own inner demon reflected through a mirror?

It’s actually a still from Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, one great episode from The Twilight Zone. And the passenger who is troubled by a gremlin is played by none other than William Shatner.
