Remembering Arnie’s Movies

terminator
I was able to catch two Arnold Schwarzenegger movies last week in two separate occasions; namely, Commando and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. It was only then I realized Commando had cheesy 80’s sax music in the soundtrack, far from what an Arnie movie deserves. And I have to say that today’s generation has missed out in having Schwarzenegger as their quintessential action hero. I mean, who do they have now? I respect Jason Statham and all, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has his moments, but none of today’s action stars can kill a man by keeping him in a headlock and then jumping, breaking said man’s neck. No, they all resort to sissy kung fu tactics , or what critics call “cinematic ballet”. Ballet, for frak’s sakes.

Beginning with Bruce Willis’s John McClane in the Die Hard series, action heroes started getting hurt, yet kept getting up. But they winced, limped, and emoted that they got hurt. Arnie doesn’t have TIME to get hurt in his movies. Remember The Running Man? The original Stephen King novella had the protagonist running around in a nightmarish reality show, and had the nerve to die in the end. Arnie not only spouted one-liners while executing his opponents (“I live to see you eat that contract, but I hope you leave enough room for my fist because I’m going to ram it into your stomach and break your god-damn spine! ” ), but led a rebellion which overthrew the dystopic government. And what about Total Recall? Which other action hero gets restrained in metal shackles, then not only pulls out the shackle free from the armrest, but stabs an evil technician in the jugular with a jagged metal bar protruding from the shackle? Badass. Oh, and he recovers from the effects of rapid decompression with nary a bloodshot eye.

So what do today’s audiences have today? Jason Statham losing his clothes during a fight sequence to the pleasure of the leading lady in Transporter 3. The Rock choosing a camel as his steed in The Scorpion King. Shia “nonononoNo” LeBoeuf running scared from robot aliens and insane Eagle Eyes.

Just watched Watchmen

Ariel,  Lei, and I watched a sneak preview of Watchmen earlier in Globe Platinum Cinema in Gateway Mall this afternoon. This Zack Snyder film is faithful to the book, so much so that I’m worried for the moviegoers who didn’t read the book first. My opinion is the movie maybe TOO faithful, a fate suffered by the earlier Harry Potter movies. I mean, really, is faithfulness to the source material important in today’s comic book movie? The biggest comic book movie to date, The Dark Knight, has a Joker sans laughing gas and gun-with-flag.

Anyway, Rorschach is still splendid in his psychosis. And there’s no question I’ll watch again. And again in the director’s cut via the small screen.

By the way, I intentionally avoided many clips and viral videos pertaining to Watchmen so I can avoid spoilers. However, some videos are recommended for viewing prior to watching the film. The following, for example, explains the Keene Act.

And another one on a faux-news feature about Dr. Manhattan.

Croissant

croissant

I was hanging around Trinoma’s expansive supermarket, and after getting a free sample of Nescafe intense blend coffee mix, I headed towards French Baker for a whole wheat croissant. I was initially nervous about the taste as compared to refined flour-butter croissant, but the high-fiber version turned out to be just as tasty.
They say that croissants came about after the French won a victory against the Moors in the decisive Battle of Tours. The bakers of France decided to honor this event by baking a pastry in the shape of the crescent, a symbol of Islam (hence, the term, “croissant”). By eating this symbolic crescent, the people of France can relive their victory again and again.

I’m thinking, if the French tried pulling that stunt in this modern age, the Danish pastry will soon have company among the baked goods that are firebombed in Europe.

Well, I just found out mere days before the even that I could not directly sell Akibakada during the Nihongo Festival. I was able to stock Powerbooks Mall of Asia in time, though.

Thanks to Lorie, Leo, Francis, Drix, Christine, Mark C., Ariel “Project:Makeover” A., Polz, GXMania and Peachy for making it to the event. You guys are da best! And thanks to Japan Foundation, Manila for including me in their activities.

And yes, Akibakada is now available in Powerbooks Mall of Asia. Expect the other branches to be stocked during this coming week and in National Bookstore by Thursday onwards. Provincial stores will be stocked by the end of the month.

Sorry.
