The Rising Sun + Otoko Tachi No Yamato

I have been reading John Toland’s The Rising Sun, a chronicle of the rise and fall of the Japanese Empire in World War II.

The book is somewhat pro-Japanese, describing many of the atrocities reported were isolated incidents and the hesitance of Emperor Hirohito with declaring war with the United States. It gave several explanations as to why the United States, after being attacked by Japan,  gave early priority to Hitler (it was Churchill’s influence) and why the Bataan Death March occurred (the Japanese never resorted to surrender and so didn’t have a clear procedure on the treatment of thousands of captured enemy soldiers).

I also found out that the Japanese’ invasion of China happened years before Pearl Harbor and that Fortress Singapore was taken because the Imperial Army biked across Indochina to attack the unprotected North shore (the British guns faced towards the sea and couldn’t be turned around). Also, the Japanese didn’t have radar and didn’t know their military codes were broken the entire time, leading to America’s advantage over them.

Excited with all this war drama, I got to watch Otoko Tachi no Yamato, a 2005 Japanese film about the largest battleship ever made from the point of view of the crew members.

Given the high I’ve experienced with The Rising Sun,  it thrilled me to witness the many events described in the book. The movie features a lot of the crew’s family members promising to meet them in Hiroshima, as if foreshadowing the impending nuclear holocaust several months later. (I half expected one to say, ‘I have a bad feeling about Hiroshima. I’ll stay in Nagasaki, instead.’)

Of course, all of this was experienced with 300 in mind. If you knew you were facing defeat, would you fight, anyway?

So what did I take away from the book and movie?  The Philippines must never attack another sovereign nation. The Japanese has a warrior culture, but little resources. The Philippines has neither.  Sure, the losers of World War II are now thriving economies, but I think that speaks of the populations’ inherent attitudes.

And they still have American bases stationed within their borders to this very day.

I’ll try looking for WWII Pacific battle films in the coming weeks, and rewatch Pearl Harbor, again.

The SanMigLight people promised that the promotional Beerkada Buckets would be available this April.

Well, Carpool creator Syeri B. sighted the elusive bucket at Oyster Boy in beautiful Shopwise, Cubao.

Now we wait a little longer for the buckets in convenience stores. Keep a lookout, guys!

I also need 5 other volunteers to drink 3 SanMigLight apiece at Oyster Boy. We’ll have a lottery to see who gets the coveted Beerkada bucket.

Relationships-Mellow 94.7 1st Anniversary Event

Relationships, a listener talkback/advice portion on Mellow 94.7, just celebrated its DJ Marco and Ms D’s 1st Relationships anniversary at Carlo’s Pizza in Metrowalk, Ortigas Center, Pasig last April 10, 2008. Though it’s Marco and D’s first year, other DJ’s have also handled Relationships in the previous years.

As you know, Chompy’s a big fan of the show and its hosts, Ms. D and DJ Marco, so she HAD to be there. And that means I have to be there, too, because she needs someone to escort her home. Every 8 pm to 12 midnight, Relationships 947 is broadcasted every Thursday nights. On Tuesdays, it is Secret Tuesdays with D and Marco, while it’s Mellow Nights with Marco every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

I got to meet the other DJs (DJ Chloe and DJ Chris of the CNC Music Factory, M-F 4-8pm), as well. The pizza’s good in Carlo’s, but they didn’t pipe in the live broadcast indoors , so we had to listen in using Chompy’s FM radio/Nokia N80 (she wanted to dine outside with the DJ’s, but I wanted to get await from the summer heat.) The manager allowed us to plug her phone charger into their wall socket, though.

We wanted to pay via credit card, but their machine was broken, so we paid in cash. So between the non-Mellow music indoors and the broken credit card machine, the whole Carlo’s experience was unpleasant. Plus, they took their time getting the pizza to us.

During the course of the meal, we kept hearing loud static from the airplay. Chompy talked with DJ Marco afterwards, and, as we suspected, something was interfering with their signal. Chomps related that, while passing through Ortigas Center at the start of the workday, her signal from Mellow gets interrupted.

DJ Marco blames suspects a rival radio station stationed in Ortigas.

Looking for a Male Dachshund Partner

Apr04

Chompy says: Hello! Chompy here. I have temporarily taken over the website to ask the help of all Beerkada readers!

I have a 2-year old female dachshund who is now in heat. In other words, ready for having puppies. I think I am also ready to let Snow (my dog) to have puppies now, though she has been ready for more than a year now. Snow is a small, short-haired, dapple dachshund as you can see below. As a trivia, Snow is the dog whom Mini-Chomps is based on.

If you have a male dachshund looking for some good time *wink* *wink* , please do let me know by posting here. I believe that the optimum time for mating would be 9 days from the start of bleeding, and Snow started bleeding last Wednesday, April 2. Maybe we can arrange a meet up next Monday (April 7 which is a holiday) or Saturday (April 12). I’d be willing to be the one to visit your dog at your place (hopefully within Metro Manila).

Thank you very much!

Big Dog robot video

A video is circulating right now in the Internet about a four-legged robot that’s built to carry backbacks on all sorts of terrain. The US military’s DARPA research division is funding its development.

It’s all cool until the 38 second mark, when a researcher kicked it.

The robot eventually regained its balance.

In the future, when robots are fighting for its rights, this video will be the earliest video evidence of robo-buse.

Have we learned nothing from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Will Smith, and Robin Williams? Why did he have to kick the droid?

I pray for scientists to install the 3 Laws protocol soon.
