This is not something Bishops or other Clergy would condone in the 21st Century Catholic Church when there are less lethal means to fulfill one’s Lenten Vows.
However, the reasons those hardcore penitents fulfill such extreme vows is no laughing matter.
I do hope he would mock this practice for the form but not the substance behind it. it is deplorable that the whole thing has become more of a tourist attraction than act of piety

We did some interviews in Cutud, and at least those who undergo the ritual are still dead serious about it. And in the end, that’s all that matters.
