Global Economic Meltdown

The day that Barack Osama won the presidential elections, the thought that came into my mind was, “After 8 years of George W. Bush, has the United States finally come to its senses?” With the $700 billion government bailout of the top financial institutions, I thought, “Ah, there we go.”

I’ve been reviewing the analysis on the economic meltdown that is currently happening in the US. What basically happened was the US underwent a housing bubble that just burst. If you remember a few years ago, companies like Enron and Worldcom declared bankruptcy and nobody tried bailing them out; instead, they became the poster children for corporate excesses. Now, financial institutions like Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Lehmann Brothers are getting a bailout.
Its not as if all of this wasn’t predicted years before. Many people didn’t choose to listen to the doomsayers because, heck, that’s the nature of bubbles. The thing is, the politicians got involved because they had to be seen doing something. Remember 9/11? The US military invaded Iraq through the lie of Weapons of Mass Destruction because people demanded a big show of force  against an enemy that couldn’t be located (where in the world is Osama?) And now, with millions of people about to lose their homes during election season, it won’t be enough for politcians to say this downturn is a necessary self-correction of the free market. Last I heard, they’re printing more money to fund the $700 billion bailout. That will lead to dollar devaluation.  Eesh.

So what does this mean for the Philippines? Convert all your dollars to other currencies, and save up for that trip to the US. Things are going to be mighty cheap over there pretty soon.

Komikon Saturday

I’m watching Mission: Impossible III, and did I just catch Matt Parkman of Heroes talking to Ethan Hunt at the beginning of the movie?

During Komikon Week, ASAPhil organized a simultaneous event as well, and invited me along with Jomike Tejido (Foldabots) and Manix Abrera (Kiko Machine) to tour in UP Diliman.

Jomike’s Foldabots book (as seen in K-Zone!) is being sold during the event, while I doled out flyers for Komikon Sunday. Thanks to Jan, Camille, Nene, Alie, and the rest of ASAPhil-UP Diliman for inviting me to their event.

Komikon is over once more, and its been great as usual. The weather held up.

Here are some highlights of the event.

*Miss Gilda Olvidado (creator, Sinasamba Kita) and the Kiko Redondo, the brother of Nestor Redondo, dropped by for a visit. He’s seen here with Ariel A. (Class).

*Indie Komiks continue to improve, and this time, its the marketing. Creators are giving away copies of their work for free; some are experimenting with gift books and other formats.

*Beerkadet Paulo bought the Boopey standee near the end of Komikon 08.
I wrote instructions at the back on how to clean Boopey after he’s…finished with her.

It’s not easy being a pimp.

*A lot of the second-generation Beerkadets supported the event, such as Kai, GXMania, Tenkouken, Mark Pua, Mark Poa, ILenz, Oliver, and Naja. Special thanks to Jinky and Kevin, as well as Chompy’s mom and youngest brother, who all helped in the Artist’s Den booth.

Jinky was selling her Chakka Dolls throughout the event. They reminded me of my own plans for a Mini-Mamaw toyline.

* I spotted some three Rorschach cosplayers during the event. Aww, and I already bought my khaki trenchcoat.

Thanks to everyone who attended, as well as to Komikon, Lunar Rock, and all the artists, writers, and creators for bringing another successful Komiks Convention to a close.

See you next year!

Komikon Report: Tuesday

During the Tuesday talk with Jonas Diego, he shared the issues with comics writing. He says pure writers need artists, and to get an artist on board, he needs to believe in the work as well. I guess that’s the incentive for writer-artist teams to bring out great stuff, as evidenced by the Tan-Baldisimo collaboration Trese.

Komikon Report: Monday

The symposium last Monday was remarkable. The morning period had really talented artists sharing their career beginnings, I really enjoyed Harvey Tolibao’s rise in the industry, as related in his endearing folksy mannerisms. During the afternoon session, we found out how much comics has penetrated the halls of academe. Advocates like Prof. Emil Flores and Elbert Or continue to push the komiks agenda, especially komiks appreciation and awareness of history.

Of particular interest is the participation of Gospel Comics, a publication I’ve read back in high school. Their members are engaging in the conversation because they want to learn the current issues in the industry.
